The problemInvasive lionfish on a Florida reef
Why it matters

An invasive predator with no native checks.

Lionfish are not native to Florida waters. Reportedly introduced through the aquarium trade, they have established widespread populations across Atlantic reefs, with few natural predators and an outsized appetite for native fish.

Strategic, repeated removal is the most effective tool divers and reef communities have to slow the damage and give native species room to recover.

From the field
